Canton Audubon Society invites the public to join members for a birding hike this Sat., May 8 at 10 a.m. in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day and the Global “Big Day” sponsored by e-Bird and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The hike will begin at the Sippo Lake Park Sommer Wildlife Conservation Center, at 800 Genoa Ave. NW, on the west side of the Perry Township park, and is open of all ages. Binoculars and field guides will be available on loan for the hike.
“Sing, Fly, Soar--Like a Bird” is the theme of this year’s Migratory Bird Day, an annual global campaign to raise awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to save them. Throughout the month of May, the Great Lakes Region of Ohio hosts millions of migratory birds that are making their way from winter homes in Central & South America to breeding grounds in Canada. Many will stop off for rest and food at parks like Sippo Lake, which are on the Mississippi “flyway,” a bird super-highway of sorts. Colorful migratory warblers as well as Great Blue Herons, night herons, belted kingfishers, and a variety of ducks are likely to be seen this Saturday.
