Meet the Benzing Family

It’s a Benzing family tradition to work together to build architectural gingerbread wonders like Hogwarts, Rockefeller Center, Whoville, and many others.  Each Holiday season they share their works of art with us.

The Benzings were gracious enough to share what the project means to them below:

“A really important life skill? Gingerbread house construction. Not making. Constructing. The art of creating these massive edible structures requires gingerbread tougher than getting into Duke (which I did) and icing with the binding properties of a rare earth magnet.

My family undertakes these mega-projects for pure enjoyment. In a way, it is like the mandalas of the Tibetan monks. Countless hours over two weeks are dedicated to the simple joy of working. Then, the work is washed away, or, in our case, left out for the local sparrows to learn the meaning of “sugar high.” Pictures and memories are all that remain of Whoville, the Rockefeller Center, and Hogwarts. Each year, we enter Stark Library’s competition fully aware of our inevitable disqualification (lights are not edible). We do not create to win. Our trophy is seeing the genuine excitement on peoples’ faces.

The sweets are not permanent but their effect on me is (no, not diabetes). I learned how to design in food and when to cool the competitive spirit. I learned how to sculpt in chocolate and how teamwork is a process of chaos, perseverance, and, ultimately, sharing.”  – Laura
