Elizabeth Aultman Harter

Thursday, March 21 - 6:00 PM

Join local historian Richard Haldi as he talks about Elizabeth Aultman Harter, one of Canton's greatest philanthropists- a woman ahead of her times.

Harter School was named for Mrs. Harter, a gift from her, as was the Harter Heights area of Canton, her former summer estate. Her summer residence was where the Penny's Department Store now sits south of Tuscarawas. She gave land near her home for one of this area's first golf courses. She lived on a 14-acre estate where now the Auditorium and Cultural Center exists in one of the largest Victorian-era mansions in Ohio. She was Canton's wealthiest person and major local philanthropist. Mrs. Harter was the daughter of Cornelius Aultman, Stark's first millionaire and with her stepmother, Mrs. Aultman, established the Aultman Hospital in honor of her father. People interested in local history should be made aware of the place Mrs. Harter has in our local heritage as one of Stark County's most important women.
