Massillon Mausoleum Walk

Event Type(s): Education, Special Events / Holiday
Organization: Massillon/Westark Tourism Council
Take a leisurely stroll through Massillon Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, to learn about the history of the community and some of the influential people buried there.
On this first-time tour, local historian Margy Vogt will lead visitors around the perimeter of the grounds to see the exteriors of mausoleums.  She will tell about the prominent families buried in the beautiful vaults.  Among the notable people will be women’s rights leader Caroline McCullough Everhard; industrialists J.F. Hess and F.H. Snyder; Congressman John G. Warwick; iron and coal magnate J.P. Burton; Albert M. Wetter, who owned a circus; and the Grabers, Allmans, and Putmans, who operated downtown businesses.
The one-mile walk will be slow and shady, covering both paved lanes and grassy paths.  Vogt's previous Massillon Cemetery tours have focused on monuments in the center part of the old section of the cemetery.  Nearly 25,000 have been interred in the cemetery since its founding in 1846.
Massillon Cemetery is located at 1827 South Erie Street in Massillon, just south of the Oberlin Road exit from Ohio Route 21.
Participants should meet at the cemetery entrance.  Cemetery parking is limited, but ample free parking is available on both sides of South Erie Street.  Reservations are not necessary; the $5 fee may be paid at the beginning of the tour.
This is the first of three cemetery history tours scheduled for this year, the only one to concentrate on the mausoleums.
The walk will last about two hours.  In case of inclement weather, the tour will be rescheduled in the fall.  Monument tours will be held this year at 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, June 2, and September 8.
Vogt will lead walking tours of Massillon's historic Fourth Street at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays, May 20 and September 9.  In tandem with a tour of the Five Oaks and Thomas H. Russell mansions on Fourth Street, she will offer a Fourth Street walk on Saturday morning, June 9 (Five Oaks tour at 9:30; Fourth Street walk at 11:00).  She will offer a tour of Massillon's historic downtown on Sunday, June 3, at 2:00 p.m.
Copies of Vogt’s hardbound photographic history, Massillon: Reflections of a Community, and her paperbound Fourth Street: A Century of History and Design will both be available for purchase at the tour.
